Week 1: #GoalsGoingDown: Define Your WHY
It’s here! The first day of April and day 1 of our 30 day #GoalsGoingDown Challenge! Each week of the challenge I am going to throw some homework your way with the hope it will continue to fuel that flame you started when you set your SMART GOAL for this challenge.
This week I’m asking you to DIG DEEP and define your WHY?
We know in our lives that everything is a reaction to something else. We want a new car because it is reliable and pretty. We want the house to be clean so then we do not have to lift a finger and we can spend time doing the things we actually enjoy! If we kept digging we could see those reasons go even deeper. For example, maybe we want a new car because it is a symbol of our success and the new car may help us internalize and acknowledge our hard work which we may be too hard on ourselves to currently give. Maybe the clean house is the goal because you notice these material things taking place of relationships that you wish to spend more time on. This is the digging I’m talking about.
The most common health goal I get is, “I want to lose weight.” First off, this is not a SMART goal. How will this client feel success if there is no defined finish line? The answer is that they will not. They will be in that circle of disappointment as long as they have an undefined goal but also as long as they do not start to dig deeper than the surface. This is where WHY comes in. “Why do you feel you need to lose weight?”, “Why do you feel being smaller will make you look better?”, “Why do you want your kids to see you differently?”, “Why is your weight holding you back from living the life you want with your family?”. The surface rarely gets us to the deep down reason that will actually motivate us to make the change.
This week’s challenge for you is to ask yourself, WHY? If you truly dig deep and investigate your reasoning you may find it’s not about a race, a wedding, or that 20lbs. The goal will end up being about building your character and growing your relationships with yourself and others.
TODAY HERE IS YOUR HOMEWORK: COMPLETE THE WORKSHEET HERE!
WRITE YOUR GOAL IN AN “I WILL…” STATEMENT:
ASK YOURSELF “WHY” 5X TO FIND WHY COMPLETING THIS GOAL IS IMPORTANT TO YOU:
WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR GROWTH BY DOING THIS EXERCISE?
WHAT IS YOUR % CONFIDENCE YOU CAN SPEND 2 MINUTES EACH DAY REFLECTING ON YOUR WHYS?
WHAT GREAT THINGS ARE YOU DOING THIS WEEK TO GET YOU CLOSER TO YOUR GOAL?
Again I encourage you to share these WHYs publicly with loved ones at home or with your social community and tag Grounded Pada Health so I can keep up too! Remember this week, please take 2 minutes per day, maybe with your morning coffee or as your head hits the pillow, to reflect on your WHYs. Investing this time in your connection to your goals will inspire you to make them happen!
I have read all of your strengths and I know they will be on display as you embark on week 1!
